The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay have confirmed in an exclusive interview with The Direct’s Russ Milheim that plans for a fifth season of the Amazon Studios series are still intact.
Season 2 of the hit show premiered earlier this year on October 3, but there has been no official word from Amazon regarding a proper Season 3 renewal for the project.
However, (both the audience and the production team) do not expect season 2 to be the final episode. After all, season 2 has had over 55 million viewers worldwide and the ratings are quite good.
The showrunners have finalized a five-season plan and are gearing up for season three.
“So far, so good. Plans continue.”
The Direct: “It was recently reported that the show is slated for five seasons. Can you comment on that? Is that still something you’re hoping to do, if all goes well?”
Patrick McKay: That was a job we’ve been applying for for months. We were thinking of this as a multi-season epic from start to finish, and that’s the second era, and all the stories in it and all the people in it. And so far, so good. Plans continue.
When asked about a potential Season 3 tease (i.e. the potential presence of The One Ring), the showrunners were tight-lipped, but McKay confirmed that they are “working on another season of the show.”
MacKay: I can’t say anything other than we’re working hard. We’re preparing for another season of the show and we’re very excited about it, but that’s all I can say right now.

The Direct: “Season 2 finally gave Gandalf his name. But I’m sure a lot of fans knew that from the first episode. So my question is, why was this the perfect time to finally tell the audience who this guy is?”
JD Payne: The character himself went on a journey of self-discovery, and he learned what it means to be an Istar. [He] learned that his mission was ultimately to face Sauron. He learned how to control his power. He found his staff. And he also learned that it’s more important to use friendship truthfully than to see power as an end in itself. So he learned some of the core truths about what it means to be an Istar, and it felt right to give him his name at that time.
